Yirringarni is one of the Tiwi traditional vegetation classifications, meaning billabong, swamp or waterhole. Waterholes are the principal source of life in the outback and form sacred sites where people meet for physical and spiritual sustenance.

They are both social and sacred sites for Aboriginal communities, and the rivers and gullies that link them form natural pathways for people to travel between them. Connected waterholes are one of the most common symbols in Aboriginal art.
